A travel money card lets you spend abroad in foreign currencies without the high conversion charges of a standard Bulgarian debit or credit card. These are typically prepaid or multi-currency accounts from fintech providers that let you hold and convert lev (BGN), euro, US dollars and other currencies, then pay or withdraw cash at rates close to the mid-market. They are popular with Bulgarians travelling outside the euro area or shopping online in foreign currencies.
Most travel money cards are issued by EU-licensed e-money and payment institutions passporting into Bulgaria and supervised by the Bulgarian National Bank. Because the lev is pegged to the euro at 1.95583 under a currency board — with euro adoption planned — spending in euro carries little conversion friction, so the biggest savings from these cards come on non-euro currencies. Cards run on the Visa or Mastercard networks and work anywhere those are accepted.
Near mid-market rates — conversion is close to the real exchange rate, cheaper than typical bank card markups.
Multi-currency balances — hold several currencies and lock in rates before you travel.
Spending control — prepaid options let you load a set budget, limiting exposure if the card is lost.
App management — freeze the card, set limits and track spending in real time from your phone.
Compare the conversion margin, any monthly fee, and the limits on fee-free ATM withdrawals — many cards charge once you exceed a monthly cash threshold. Check weekend or out-of-hours exchange surcharges, and whether the currencies you need are supported. For frequent travellers, a paid plan with higher free limits may beat a free plan. Confirm the card works on a widely accepted network at your destination.
Wise offers a multi-currency account and card converting at the mid-market rate with transparent fees, while Revolut bundles a travel-friendly card with budgeting and multi-currency features across tiered plans. Western Union and Remitly are better known for transfers but also provide card and payout options useful to travellers. All operate under EU authorisation and are managed through their apps.
Many cards are free to obtain, earning revenue from conversion margins and out-of-limit ATM fees. Free plans usually include a monthly allowance of fee-free withdrawals and standard conversions, beyond which small percentage charges apply. Paid subscriptions raise those limits and add perks. Weekend conversions on some cards carry a surcharge. As always, compare the total cost of spending abroad, not just the sign-up fee.
Card issuers are e-money or payment institutions supervised by the Bulgarian National Bank, and customer funds are safeguarded separately from company money. This safeguarding differs from the bank deposit guarantee, so balances on a travel card are not covered by the 196,000 BGN / €100,000 deposit scheme. Use card freezing, spending limits and strong authentication to protect against loss and fraud while abroad.
Are they worth it inside the euro area? Savings are largest on non-euro currencies; for euro spending the benefit is smaller given the peg.
Can I withdraw cash abroad? Yes, usually with a monthly fee-free allowance, after which a percentage fee applies.
Is my balance protected like a bank deposit? No — funds are safeguarded, not covered by the deposit guarantee, so the protection is different.
