What is Car Insurance in Germany?

Car insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) in Germany comes in three levels. Kfz-Haftpflicht, third-party liability, is legally mandatory for every registered vehicle and pays for damage or injury you cause to others. On top of that you can add Teilkasko (partial cover) for risks such as theft, fire, glass and storm damage, or Vollkasko (comprehensive), which also covers damage to your own car including in an at-fault accident and vandalism. You cannot register a car without valid liability cover.

How the German market works

Premiums are calculated from several German-specific factors. Your Schadenfreiheitsklasse (SF-Klasse), or no-claims class, rises with each claim-free year and steadily lowers your premium; a claim pushes you back down the scale. The car's Typklasse (a risk rating for the model) and the Regionalklasse (a rating for where you live) also feed into the price, as do annual mileage, driver age and where the car is parked.

To register or re-insure a vehicle you need an eVB number (elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung), an electronic confirmation of cover issued by the insurer and presented at the registration office. The market has a well-known annual switching season: because most policies renew on 1 January, the standard cancellation deadline is 30 November (the Wechselsaison), when many drivers compare and change insurers. Some policies include Werkstattbindung, a workshop tie-in that lowers the premium in exchange for using the insurer's approved repair garages.

Benefits

Legal compliance — Kfz-Haftpflicht meets the mandatory requirement and lets you register and drive the vehicle.

No-claims savings — each claim-free year improves your SF-Klasse, cutting the premium over time.

Flexible cover levels — add Teilkasko for theft and weather risks, or Vollkasko for full protection of your own car.

Annual switching — the November deadline lets you re-shop every year to keep pricing competitive.

Optional premium reductions — choosing Werkstattbindung or a higher excess can lower the cost.

How to choose

Start with the cover level. Liability alone is the minimum; newer or higher-value cars usually justify Vollkasko, while older cars may only warrant Teilkasko or liability. Then compare premiums using your SF-Klasse and the car's Typklasse and Regionalklasse, since the same driver can pay very different prices between insurers.

Check the excess (Selbstbeteiligung) on Teilkasko and Vollkasko — a common structure is a lower glass excess and a higher accident excess. Look at useful add-ons such as Mallorca-Police for rental cars abroad, gap cover (Neuwertentschädigung) for new vehicles, and protection of your no-claims class after a first claim (Rabattschutz). Decide whether Werkstattbindung is acceptable in return for a discount, and mind the 30 November deadline if you intend to switch.

Leading providers in Germany

HUK-COBURG — the market leader in German car insurance, known for competitive direct pricing.

ADAC — popular with members, combining insurance with motoring assistance.

AXA, Generali and ERGO — large insurers offering full liability, Teilkasko and Vollkasko ranges.

VHV Versicherungen, Helvetia DE and Inter Versicherungen — established insurers competing on price and cover options.

What it costs

Annual premiums commonly range from around €220 to €500, though the price depends heavily on your SF-Klasse, the car's Typklasse and Regionalklasse, mileage and cover level. A driver with a long no-claims record insuring a modest car for liability sits at the lower end, while comprehensive Vollkasko on a newer or higher-risk car, or a younger driver with a low SF-Klasse, pushes toward or beyond the top. Choosing a higher excess, accepting Werkstattbindung or limiting annual mileage can meaningfully reduce the premium.

Protections and regulation

Motor insurers in Germany are authorised and supervised by BaFin. Kfz-Haftpflicht is governed by statutory minimum cover requirements, so third-party liability limits are high by law, protecting accident victims. Kasko cover is contractual, so the protections depend on the policy — the insured risks, the excess and any Werkstattbindung. Because liability cover is compulsory, driving without it is a criminal offence, and the eVB number ensures a vehicle cannot be registered without valid insurance in place.

Common questions

What is the minimum I must have? Kfz-Haftpflicht (third-party liability) is legally required for every registered vehicle.

When can I switch insurers? Most policies renew on 1 January, so the standard cancellation deadline is 30 November — the annual Wechselsaison.

Teilkasko or Vollkasko? Teilkasko covers theft, fire, glass and weather; Vollkasko adds at-fault accident and vandalism damage to your own car, and suits newer vehicles.

Car Insurance in Germany — FAQ

What is the cheapest car insurance in Germany?

Giraffy tracks 5 car insurance products across HUK-COBURG,ADAC,AXA,Generali,Friday Insurance insurers in Germany. The lowest tracked price is €220 /year. Your individual premium depends on your vehicle, driving history, and location — comparing quotes regularly is the most effective way to cut costs.

What is the difference between third-party and comprehensive car insurance?

Third-party cover is the minimum legal requirement in most markets — it pays for damage you cause to other vehicles and people but not your own car. Comprehensive cover includes damage to your own vehicle regardless of fault — and is often only marginally more expensive than third-party cover.

What factors affect my car insurance premium?

Key factors include: age and driving experience, claims history and no-claims bonus, vehicle make, model, and engine size, annual mileage, where you park overnight, postcode, and whether you add named drivers. Younger drivers typically pay more due to statistically higher accident rates.

What is an excess and how does it affect my premium?

The excess is the amount you contribute towards a claim before the insurer pays the rest. There's usually a compulsory excess (set by the insurer) and a voluntary excess (you choose). Raising your voluntary excess lowers your premium — but make sure you could comfortably pay it if you needed to claim.

What is a no-claims bonus (NCB) and how does it work?

An NCB (or no-claims discount) rewards claim-free years with lower premiums — typically 10–15% discount per year, up to around 60–70% after 5+ years. You can protect your NCB with an add-on that allows 1–2 at-fault claims without losing your discount. Check if your NCB is transferable when switching insurers.

Does adding named or additional drivers affect my car insurance premium?

Adding an experienced driver with a clean record can sometimes reduce premiums. However, adding a young or inexperienced driver almost always increases costs. 'Fronting' — where a parent is listed as the main driver to reduce a young driver's premium — is illegal and can void a policy.

Can I get car insurance as a temporary or short-term policy?

Yes — temporary car insurance is available from specialist providers for short periods. It's useful for driving a car you don't own, sharing driving on a long trip, or covering a car you're selling. These policies don't affect the main policy holder's no-claims bonus.
