What are Travel SIMs in Italy?

A travel SIM is a data plan designed for people on the move, letting you get online abroad without paying your home operator's roaming rates or buying a local SIM at each destination. Today most are eSIMs — digital SIMs downloaded to your phone via a QR code rather than a physical card. For travellers based in Italy, they are mainly useful for trips outside the EU, since within the European Union the "Roam Like At Home" rules mean your normal Italian plan already works at domestic prices.

How the travel eSIM market works

Providers partner with mobile networks worldwide and resell blocks of data as data-only plans covering a single country, a region (such as Europe, Asia or the Americas) or the whole globe. Because these are foreign data services, you do not need an Italian SIM or any AGCOM registration or ID check to use them — you simply buy online, install the eSIM and connect on arrival. Italy's telecom regulator AGCOM governs domestic SIMs, but foreign eSIM data plans fall outside that identity-verification requirement.

Key benefits

Instant activation — buy before you fly and scan a QR code to install; the plan can activate automatically when you land.

No physical swap — your Italian SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data.

Predictable cost — you pay a set price for a set amount of data, avoiding bill shock from pay-as-you-go roaming.

Coverage flexibility — regional and global plans suit multi-country itineraries.

When you need one — and when you don't

Inside the EU, thanks to Roam Like At Home, your Italian tariff already covers you at no extra cost, so a travel SIM is unnecessary. They become valuable for non-EU destinations — the USA, the UK, Turkey, the UAE, most of Asia, Africa and Latin America — where standard roaming can be very expensive. They are also handy for visitors coming to Italy who want data without a local contract.

How to choose

First confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked; most recent iPhone and Android flagship models qualify, but older or budget handsets may not. Match the plan's coverage to your itinerary, estimate your data needs (maps and messaging are light; streaming and hotspots are heavy), and check the validity window and whether you can top up if you run low. Compare price per GB rather than headline price.

Leading providers

Well-known travel eSIM brands available to Italian travellers include Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi, RedteaGO, KnowRoaming, FlexiRoam, eSIMX and GlobaleSIM. Each offers a slightly different mix of country coverage, plan sizes and pricing, so the best choice depends on where you are going.

What it costs

Plans span a wide range, from around €1 for a small single-country data pack up to about €150 for large, long-validity global or high-data bundles. A typical week-long trip with a few gigabytes of data usually costs somewhere in the low tens of euros. Regional plans covering many countries cost more than single-country ones but save money versus buying several separate SIMs.

Common questions

Can I keep my Italian number? Yes — the eSIM handles data while your physical SIM keeps your number for calls and SMS.

Do I need to register my ID? No. Foreign data-only eSIMs require no AGCOM registration, unlike Italian SIM cards.

Will it work in the EU? It can, but you rarely need it inside the EU because your Italian plan already roams at home rates.
