A travel money card lets Polish residents spend and withdraw cash abroad while keeping conversion costs low. In practice this means one of two things: a multi-currency account and card from a fintech such as Revolut, or a foreign-currency (walutowe) sub-account and card offered by a mainstream bank. Both let you hold or convert złoty into euros, dollars and other currencies, then pay by card or phone overseas at rates far better than a standard złoty card charged a foreign-transaction margin.
Polish banks have responded to fintech competition by adding multi-currency cards and in-app currency exchange (kantor) to their apps. A traveller can convert PLN to EUR inside the app, load the currency sub-account and spend without conversion fees at point of sale. Fintechs go further with interbank exchange rates and free tiers, though weekend markups and monthly limits apply. BLIK works domestically, but abroad the card network (Visa or Mastercard) does the work, so the exchange rate and fee structure are what matter.
Lower conversion costs — Convert at close-to-market rates instead of paying a standard card's foreign-transaction margin.
Hold multiple currencies — Keep EUR, USD, GBP and more, and lock in a rate before you travel.
Spending control — Freeze the card, set limits and get instant notifications through the app.
Cash access abroad — Withdraw local currency at ATMs, often with a monthly fee-free allowance.
Compare the exchange rate applied, any weekend or markup surcharge, and monthly limits on fee-free conversion and ATM withdrawals. Check whether the card is virtual, physical or both, and whether Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported. If you prefer to keep everything with your main bank, a foreign-currency sub-account may be simplest; if you want the sharpest rates and travel features, a dedicated fintech card usually wins.
Revolut is the best-known multi-currency card, offering interbank rates and a strong app. Among banks, Bank Pekao, ING Bank Śląski, Bank Millennium, mBank, PKO Bank Polski, Santander Poland and Alior Bank all offer multi-currency or foreign-currency cards with in-app exchange. Choice often comes down to whether you value integration with an existing account or the extra travel features of a specialist provider.
Card and account fees range from PLN 0 on free fintech and bank tiers up to around PLN 79 for premium travel or multi-currency plans with higher fee-free limits. Beyond the headline fee, watch for weekend exchange markups, ATM withdrawal charges above a monthly allowance, and inactivity fees. For most travellers a free tier plus modest currency use costs little to nothing.
Bank-issued cards fall under KNF supervision and BFG deposit protection up to the EUR 100,000 equivalent. E-money and fintech providers are authorised as payment or e-money institutions under EU rules, with customer funds safeguarded separately rather than deposit-guaranteed. All cards benefit from Visa or Mastercard chargeback rules and PSD2 strong customer authentication for online payments.
Is a fintech card safer than a bank card abroad? Both are secure; bank deposits carry BFG cover, while fintech balances are safeguarded under e-money rules.
Can I avoid conversion fees entirely? Largely, if you convert to the local currency in-app before spending and stay within fee-free limits.
Do I still use BLIK abroad? BLIK is mainly for Poland; overseas your card runs on the Visa or Mastercard network.
Should I convert before or during the trip? Converting in-app before you travel locks the rate, but you can also convert on the spot; either way, aim to spend in the local currency to avoid double conversion.
