Travel insurance in Taiwan protects residents on overseas or domestic trips against medical emergencies, accidents, trip cancellation, baggage loss and travel delays. It comes in two related forms: travel accident insurance (旅行平安保險), a life-insurer product paying for death or disability, and overseas travel medical and inconvenience cover from non-life insurers. Many travellers buy a bundled policy, and some card and airline channels include basic cover automatically. Policies are short-term, matched to each trip's duration.
Because of Taiwan's strict separation of life and non-life insurance, the accident/death element and the medical/inconvenience element can come from different insurers, often packaged together at purchase. Policies are sold online, at airports, through banks and travel agents, and via insurer apps that quote instantly by destination and dates. Premiums scale with trip length, destination risk and coverage limits, and buyers can add cover for adventure activities or higher medical caps.
Overseas medical cover — Pays for hospital treatment and emergency evacuation abroad, where Taiwan's National Health Insurance does not reach.
Trip protection — Reimburses non-refundable costs if cancellation, delay or missed connections disrupt your plans.
Baggage and belongings — Covers loss, theft or damage to luggage and personal items during the journey.
Accident benefit — The travel-accident element pays a lump sum for death or permanent disability from a covered accident.
Emergency assistance — A 24-hour multilingual helpline arranges hospital admission, evacuation and repatriation, which matters most in countries where Taiwan's NHI offers no reach.
Match the medical limit to your destination, high for the US or Japan where care is costly, and confirm emergency evacuation and repatriation are included. Check whether pre-existing conditions, adventure sports or COVID-related claims are covered. Compare the cancellation and delay thresholds, per-item baggage caps and the 24-hour assistance line. If you already hold card or NHI-linked cover, top up rather than duplicate.
Non-life insurers such as Fubon Insurance Taiwan and Allianz Taiwan lead on medical and inconvenience cover, while life insurers including Cathay Life Insurance, Nan Shan Life Insurance, Shin Kong Life, Fubon Life, AIA Taiwan and Prudential Life Taiwan provide the travel-accident element. Bundled products from these groups are widely sold online and at airports.
Short-trip premiums in this comparison typically run from about NT 60 to NT$500 for a standard package, depending on trip length, destination and cover limits. A week in nearby Asia sits at the lower end, while longer trips to higher-cost destinations with generous medical caps and adventure add-ons cost more. Family and annual multi-trip options are also available.
Both the life-insurer accident element and the non-life medical element are regulated by the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC). Products come from licensed insurers on their respective sides of the life/non-life divide, and the Taiwan Insurance Guaranty Fund provides limited protection if an insurer becomes insolvent. Policy terms and exclusions must be clearly disclosed at sale.
Does NHI cover me abroad? Only partially, through limited emergency reimbursement after you return, so overseas travel medical cover is strongly advised.
Why are there two policies? Taiwan's life/non-life separation means the accident/death benefit and the medical/inconvenience cover often come from different insurers, usually sold together.
Can I buy at the airport? Yes, counters and apps sell last-minute cover, though buying earlier protects against pre-departure cancellation too.
Are adventure activities covered? Not always, skiing, diving and other higher-risk pursuits are frequently excluded or need a specific add-on, so check the activity list and buy the extension before you travel if you plan to take part.
The cheapest Travel Insurance in Taiwan is NT 60 /trip from Taiwan Life.
Giraffy tracks 5 travel insurance products across Taiwan Life,Nan Shan Life,Prudential Life Taiwan,Fubon Life,AIA Taiwan insurers in Taiwan. The lowest tracked price is NT 60 /trip. Compare by cover level and excess, not just price — a very cheap policy may have low medical cover limits or high excesses that leave you underinsured.
At minimum, look for: emergency medical treatment and repatriation (at least £5–10 million), trip cancellation and curtailment, baggage and personal effects, personal liability, and passport/travel document cover. Travel to the US requires especially high medical limits due to healthcare costs.
If you take three or more trips per year, annual multi-trip insurance is almost always cheaper than buying single-trip policies. The annual policy covers an unlimited number of trips up to a maximum trip duration (typically 31–90 days). Check that all your planned destinations and activities are included.
Standard policies often exclude pre-existing conditions or charge an additional premium to include them. Always declare medical conditions when applying — failure to disclose can invalidate your claim. Specialist providers offer cover for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, though premiums will be higher.
Most standard policies exclude or limit adventure sports — skiing, snowboarding, scuba diving, and other higher-risk activities require specialist cover or add-ons. If you're planning active travel, check the policy's activity list or take out a specialist policy that explicitly includes your planned activities.
The excess is the amount you pay towards each claim before the insurer pays the balance. Higher excess = lower premium. Choose an excess you can comfortably afford — if your excess is £200 and your lost luggage claim is £150, you'll receive nothing. Check whether the excess applies per claim or per incident.
