Buy now, pay later (BNPL) lets you receive goods immediately and pay in instalments, either interest-free over a short period or over a longer term with interest. In Hungary the concept overlaps with established instalment purchase (részletfizetés) and point-of-sale financing offered by banks at retailers, alongside newer app-based BNPL at online checkouts. It is used to spread the cost of purchases from electronics to appliances without paying the full price upfront.
Much of the market runs through bank-provided point-of-sale credit and store instalment schemes, where a bank finances the purchase and you repay monthly, sometimes at a promotional zero-interest rate subsidised by the retailer. App-based BNPL at online checkouts is growing but less entrenched than in some Western European markets. Because these arrangements are forms of consumer credit, they are increasingly brought within consumer-credit disclosure and affordability rules.
Spread the cost — Pay for a purchase in instalments rather than all at once.
Interest-free promotions — Some retailer schemes offer zero-interest instalments over a set number of months.
Quick checkout approval — Decisions are fast at the point of sale, online or in store.
Budgeting — Predictable monthly payments can make larger purchases more manageable.
Check whether the plan is genuinely interest-free or carries a rate, and read the THM (total cost of credit indicator) where the arrangement is regulated consumer credit. Confirm the instalment amount, term, and any fees for late payment, since missed payments can trigger charges and affect your credit standing. Only commit to instalments you can comfortably meet, and compare a zero-interest store scheme against paying outright or using a low-rate personal loan.
Point-of-sale instalment financing is offered by major banks including UniCredit Hungary, K&H Bank, OTP Bank, Raiffeisen Bank Hungary, CIB Bank and Erste Bank Hungary, typically in partnership with retailers. These bank-backed schemes underpin much of Hungary's instalment purchasing. App-based BNPL providers operate at some online checkouts, but the bank-and-retailer instalment model remains the most common way Hungarians spread the cost of purchases.
Interest-free promotional schemes cost nothing extra if you pay on time, but other instalment plans carry interest reflected in the THM. Late or missed payments can trigger fees and interest and may affect your creditworthiness. Some schemes include arrangement charges. The cheapest route depends on the offer: a genuine zero-interest store scheme can be excellent value, while a longer interest-bearing plan should be compared against alternatives like a low-rate personal loan or a credit card. Because several small instalment commitments can add up, it is worth tracking the total monthly outlay across all your plans before taking on another.
Where BNPL and instalment financing qualify as consumer credit, they fall under Hungarian consumer-credit law and MNB supervision, with requirements to disclose the THM and assess affordability. EU rules are extending clearer consumer protections to short-term and BNPL credit. Borrowers generally have withdrawal and early-repayment rights on regulated agreements, and disputes can be escalated to the MNB's consumer protection function and the Financial Arbitration Board.
Is BNPL really free? — Only genuine interest-free promotions; other plans carry interest shown in the THM. What if I miss a payment? — Late fees and interest can apply and may affect your credit standing. Is it regulated? — Where it is consumer credit, MNB rules on disclosure and affordability apply. Better than a loan? — A zero-interest scheme can beat a loan; compare interest-bearing plans carefully.
