What are travel SIMs in the Netherlands?

Travel SIMs — increasingly eSIMs — give you mobile data abroad without paying your home operator's roaming charges or swapping to a foreign physical card. You buy a data plan for your destination, install it on a compatible phone, and connect on arrival. For Dutch travellers heading outside the EU, where roaming can be costly, they are a popular way to stay online cheaply.

How the Dutch market works

Within the EU, "roam like at home" rules mean Dutch SIMs from KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido work at domestic rates, so travel SIMs add little value for European trips. Their advantage is long-haul and multi-country travel — the US, Asia, the Middle East — where a global eSIM provider offers regional or worldwide data far below traditional roaming. The market is dominated by app-based eSIM specialists.

Benefits

Avoid roaming bills — Pay local-style data rates outside the EU instead of steep roaming fees.

Instant activation — Install an eSIM before you fly and connect the moment you land.

Keep your number — Run the travel eSIM alongside your Dutch SIM for calls and messages.

Regional and global plans — One plan can cover multiple countries on a single trip.

No physical SIM swap — With an eSIM there is no card to lose, and you install it entirely from an app.

How to choose

Match the plan to your itinerary: a single-country plan is cheapest for one destination, while a regional or global plan suits multi-stop trips. Check the data allowance and validity period, whether the plan is data-only or includes a local number, and confirm your phone supports eSIM. Compare price per GB across providers, as coverage and networks vary by country.

Leading providers in the Netherlands

Airalo, Nomad and Ubigi are among the best-known global eSIM providers available to Dutch travellers, alongside RedteaGO, FlexiRoam, KnowRoaming and specialist marketplaces such as eSIMX and GlobaleSIM. Each offers country, regional and worldwide bundles, so the best pick depends on destination and data needs. Coverage quality and the partner network vary by country, so it is worth checking a provider's supported networks for your exact destination before buying.

What it costs

Travel eSIM prices vary widely by destination and data volume, typically ranging from around €1 for a small single-country bundle to about €150 for large, long-duration global plans. Price per gigabyte falls as the bundle grows, so heavier users benefit from larger regional plans. Always check validity, as unused data usually expires at the end of the period. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so if you need a local phone number for calls or texts you may pay slightly more or choose a different plan. Comparing price per gigabyte across a few providers for your exact destination is the quickest way to spot the best value.

Protections and regulation

Because most travel-SIM providers operate as international digital services, Dutch and EU consumer-protection rules on distance selling and clear pricing apply at the point of purchase. Within the EU, roaming is governed by EU regulation ensuring "roam like at home", overseen nationally by the ACM. Outside the EU, coverage depends on the provider's partner networks rather than Dutch regulation.

Common questions

Do I need a travel SIM for EU trips? Usually not — EU roaming rules let your Dutch SIM work at home rates across the EU.

Will an eSIM work on my phone? Only if your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked; most recent models do.

Can I keep my Dutch number? Yes — a travel eSIM runs alongside your primary SIM, so you keep receiving calls and texts on your own number.
