What are travel SIMs in Taiwan?

Travel SIMs cover connectivity for people travelling to or from Taiwan, split into two use cases: short-term data SIMs and eSIMs for visitors arriving in Taiwan, and international/roaming eSIMs Taiwanese travellers buy for trips abroad. The market is now dominated by eSIM providers that let you download a data plan to a compatible phone before departure, avoiding roaming charges and physical SIM swaps. Plans are sold by the day, by data allowance, or as regional and global bundles.

How the Taiwan market works

Global eSIM marketplaces such as Airalo, Nomad, GigSky and others sell app-based data plans for Taiwan and for outbound destinations, provisioning instantly over the internet. For visitors to Taiwan, these ride on the local networks (Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, FarEasTone), while outbound plans use partner networks worldwide. Physical tourist SIMs are still sold at Taoyuan and other airports for those who prefer them. Pricing is competitive and transparent, quoted per data bundle and validity window, with no long-term contract.

Benefits

Instant setup — eSIMs download and activate over the internet, ready before you land or depart.

Avoids roaming fees — A local or regional data plan replaces costly operator roaming charges.

Keep your main number — An eSIM data plan runs alongside your existing SIM, so you stay reachable.

Flexible bundles — Choose single-country, regional or global plans by data amount and validity to fit the trip.

How to choose

Match the data allowance and validity to your trip length and usage, heavy map, streaming and hotspot use needs a larger bundle. Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. For visitors to Taiwan, check which local network the plan uses for coverage where you are going; for outbound trips, check the destinations covered and whether calls and texts are needed or data-only suffices. Compare the per-GB cost across providers.

Leading providers in Taiwan

The category is led by global eSIM providers rather than local telecoms, including Airalo, Nomad, GigSky, FlexiRoam, RedteaGO, KnowRoaming, eSIMX and GlobaleSIM. These marketplaces sell both inbound Taiwan plans and outbound plans for Taiwanese travellers. For those preferring physical SIMs, the three local operators (Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, FarEasTone) sell tourist prepaid SIMs at airports.

What it costs

Prices in this comparison range widely, from about NT$36 for a small short-stay data bundle up to around NT$5,477 for large or long-duration global plans. Single-country Taiwan or regional Asia plans sit at the lower end, while multi-country global bundles with generous data cost more. Pricing is per data allowance and validity, with no contract, so cost scales with how much data and how many days you need.

Protections and regulation

Telecom services used by travel SIMs and eSIMs in Taiwan are ultimately carried on networks regulated by the National Communications Commission (NCC), including SIM-registration and consumer-protection rules for local prepaid SIMs. eSIM marketplaces operate as resellers over partner networks; consumer recourse for these app-based plans rests mainly with the provider's own terms rather than local telecom regulation, so check refund and support policies before buying.

Common questions

Do I need an unlocked eSIM phone? Yes; your device must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked to install these plans.

Can I keep my normal number? Yes; an eSIM data plan runs alongside your existing physical SIM so you stay reachable.

eSIM or airport SIM? eSIMs are set up before travel and avoid queues; physical tourist SIMs from local operators remain an option at airports.

Do these plans include calls? Most travel eSIMs are data-only; if you need a local number for calls and texts you may want a physical tourist SIM, though data apps like LINE and WhatsApp usually cover communication needs.
